Professor Iain B McInnes

Professor

After training in Medicine and Immunology at the University of Glasgow and at the National Institutes of Health, USA, Iain McInnes was appointed to the post of Professor of Experimental Medicine in University of Glasgow in 2002. He is currently Director of the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation in the College of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow and a Consultant Rheumatologist based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Prof McInnes has developed a successful track record in the conduct of experimental medicine studies in rheumatology specifically and in inflammation medicine generally.  His pathogenesis discovery research activities, driven forward through a practised translational research model comprising integration of in-patient, near-patient, animal model and in vitro tissue experimentation, has contributed to new knowledge to the field of cytokine biology (e.g. IL-15, IL-18, IL-27, IL-33) and vascular co-morbidity (e.g. in the role of statins, nuclear receptors) particularly. Such studies have been performed in both rheumatoid (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) cohorts but have relevance to the wider inflammation field.  He has an established leadership role in translational medicine reflected in academic participation in the UK (e.g. as chair of the newly created Arthritis Research UK New Agents Committee, MRC Panel for Training and Fellowships (Vice Chair), UKCRN Specialty Groups Scottish Lead for Inflammation Medicine) and internationally, reflected in strategic and operational leadership within European League Against Rheumatology.  He has served as Chief Investigator or Principal Investigator at the global and national level for numerous phase I, II and III drug development programmes, working together with academic colleagues or industrial partners as required.  As such he provides knowledge and experience in the conduct and translation of a variety of investigative modalities in the field of inflammation medicine.
